Let’s get Baseball back in the Olympics!

Can we play baseball this summer?
Just when the kids are getting the hang of it, and we know you’ve seen an improvement in their skill level – baseball season draws to a close. There are a couple of things you might want to investigate to keep the sport going over the summer! There are a number of camps that your child could attend – one that I can personally recommend, because m son enjoyed it during a summer vacation – is the Triple Play Academy Camps run by Scott Price and Chris Copot.  (for kids aged 9 – 16) These 2 are both Little League graduates who went on to compete with Team Alberta, participate in the Canada Summer Games in 2005. In addition, Scott attends the University of Texas at Brownsville and Chris was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2004 & 2005. Great role models for the kids and a lot of fun and learning at the camps.  Here’s a link to their information.

Another camp is being run by Coyote Baseball for more information click here.
Cheer on the Rocky Mountain All Stars
If you’d like to cheer on our Rocky Mountain All-Star Team – we’ll be posting the All Star Schedules for all divisions on the website. Come on out if you can, I’m sure the teams would love to have some home grown supporters!
Calling all 12 & 13 year olds moving up or already a part of Juniors or Junior AA.
Fall Ball is again being run by Babe Ruth….What a great way to enjoy the usually perfect baseball weather in September! Babe Ruth Baseball traditionally runs this 5 weekend baseball season for those kids moving up into the Junior and Junior AA programs. It’s a big leap from Majors to Juniors in both diamond size and rules. Fall Ball allows the kids (and coaches) to learn the rules and play the game in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. There is one double header on one of the weekend days, with a single game on the other.  Each team has a mixture of athletes from other leagues in the city, same with coaches – so the kids get to interact and play with a whole new group. Your coach will have more information on this in a week or so to pass on. Cost will be $75.00 per athlete.
What is happening for winter camps?
We’re still working on our schedules for our winter clinics held at the Lake Bonavista Community Centre. They will start about the middle of January 2010 for kids aged 9-10. The registrations for these camps will open in Late October or early November on the website and they do fill up quickly so keep checking back on the website.

In addition, Rocky Mountain also supports the Calgary School of Baseball.  They offer a comprehensive 3 day per week program that combines 2 training nights at the U of C working with the Kinesiology students on sport specific speed, strength and agility and a 1.5 hour session on Sunday mornings for technical training. We had a number of Rocky Mountain Athletes benefit form this program last year and can recommend it for taking your child’s  game to the next level. Courses offered for kids aged 10 – 17 years. More program options are available on the website.
What about for Coaches?
We can appreciate the amount of time and effort that goes into coaching. We’d like to offer those of you who are interested in coaching a comprehensive program that will cover everything from setting up practices, learning the rules, dealing with umpires, running a perfect practice and of course, dealing with paperwork. We don’t have dates set for this 1 day forum just yet but please send me an email and what division you are interested in coaching and you’ll be put on the mailing list for that course. This is in addition to the Al & Al technical training that is offered every year.

Umpires.....
There will be courses running over the winter for aspiring umpires – after all, if you could see that pitch was a strike all the way from the bleachers – you really should try it from behind the plate! There is a possibility of a comprehensive umpire course that will run one night a week from the end of January until the middle of March which will have you belly pad deep in knowledge about the rules of the game. You can then take your new found knowledge and turn it into cash over next baseball season! Once again, let me know if you would like to be on the list for this comprehensive course. It is designed for the more mature participant who is willing and able to make all the evenings. If you make the commitment to complete the course and ump for Rocky Mountain next season, then we pay for your course!
Add me to the mailing list!
For those of our older athletes (13 and up) there will be an umpires weekend course, running March 19 -21, 2010. Passing this course means you will have achieved your level 1 certification and be qualified to umpire games at the Majors level. …and get paid!
