Question: |
I have a son & daughter, can they both play for Rocky Mountain Little League? |
|
Answer: |
Yes, Rocky Mountain Little League promotes mixed gender teams. |
|
Question: |
When & how does the season start and end and what nights do they play? |
|
Answer: |
The season generally starts very late in April or in early May and runs through until about the third or fourth week of June depending on the calendar.
Teams are usually selected by mid April and in some cases teams will practice before the season starts.
The baseball schedule is not set on specific nights of the week and will come out approximately 2 weeks prior to season
start- you will be contacted by your coach. We try to alternate nights each week as some families have other activities
that ARE on a specific schedule, such as cubs, piano, dance and soccer. This way, at least your child can enjoy more
activities. |
|
Question: |
When and how often will the children play? |
|
Answer: |
AAA and Under
There will generally be two games scheduled per week. Other than special events (tournaments, Opening Day, rainouts)
we ask coordinators to avoid Friday evenings and weekends for regularly scheduled games. We also try for flexibility in the schedule,
so one could expect to have a game Tuesday and Thursday one week, and then Monday and Wednesday the next. This allows the child to participate
in other sports (soccer for example) with a minimal amount of conflict, as many of the other sports tend to have game times fixed on a particular day.
Weeknight game times are 6:30pm (players should try to be there at 6:00pm). No inning starts after 8:00 PM.
Majors and Up
The schedules are a little more aggressive, more like 5 games every two weeks for Majors and close to 3 games per week in the older Divisions
(Juniors & up). Some weekend play is generally scheduled, particularly in the older Divisions.
Practices
Most players should expect to practice at least once per week during the season, perhaps a little more frequently near the beginning of the season.
Practice is an important part of the baseball experience for your child. This is where they can more freely interact with their team mates, learn proper
technique from the coaches and practice their skills before going into the pressure of a game. Please try to ensure your child attends practice as much
as possible. Most coaches would also welcome an extra set of parental hands for running drills etc. as well so bring your glove!
Individual team practice times will be scheduled by the coaches. |
|
Question: |
Where will the teams play? |
|
Answer: |
AAA and Under
Each has several diamond locations — the objective is to have teams playing as many games as possible as close to home as possible.
We are working with City Parks to increase our number of diamonds for T-Ball, Coach-Pitch and Rookie Ball in the southeast to reduce travel
times for those living east of Macleod Trail.
AA and Majors
Home diamonds are Southwood, Stanley Park, and St. Catherines, with Blackfoot available as scheduling permits.
Juniors & Up
All these divisions interlock with the other Leagues south of the Bow River, so some travel to other diamonds (Richmond, Douglasdale, Gladmere)
is to be expected. Home diamonds are the two at the Family Leisure Centre (Jr & Jr AA), Bow Bottom (Sr, Big League, some Jr), and Bishop Grandin
(Big League & Sr).

Question: |
What if we want our child to play on the same team with another child? |
|
Answer: |
Make the request right on your registration form. If it is possible within the constraints of fairness to all, the League will try to honor
these requests, although it may not always be possible with teams that are drafted. For teams that are drafted, this request should be stated
on the registration form and, if the team manager is known, make the request to the manager before the draft. We will always ensure that siblings
playing at the same level are on the same team, however other requests can –snowball– into a simply impossible situation. If you are told that a
request cannot be honored, please understand that there can be only so many players on one team, and the League must still place a priority on having
competitive, balanced teams. |
|
Question: |
My child is younger than your posted minimum age, but he really wants to play ball, is there a consequence to changing the birth year on the
registration? |
|
Answer: |
AAA and Under
Yes there can be serious consequences to registering an incorrect birth date.
First, our league insurance will not cover your child in the event of an accident. Secondly, all registration and team rosters, including birthdates are sent to Little League Canada and are entered in their data base.
Should your child continue in Little League and be selected for an All Star Team they must present original copies of birth certificates and residency
documents (this could happen as early as league age 9). If there is a discrepancy, your child and possibly the entire All Star team could be disqualified
from participating in All-Star play. Thirdly, it would be dishonest - not a characteristic we want to encourage in our children.
This year we will also be checking original birth certificates for T-Ball, coach pitch and Rookie ball players to ensure correct birthdates and residence
information has been recorded. |

Question: |
My child really wants to play but isn't quite 5 years old according to the cut-off, why can't he/she play? |
|
Answer: |
Our League Insurance is based on the ages stipulated in the Little League Rules,
which start at 5 years of age not 4.
There is every likelihood that in the event of an accident, League Insurance would not cover a 4 year old.
In addition, we find that at the age of four the kids are better off playing catch and hitting the ball with their parents in an unstructured environment
to maintain the —fun—
of playing the sport within the realms of the kids somewhat limited attention span. We have found over the years that kids that haven't reached
the five year old cut-off (May 1 of each year) get bored when they have to play T-Ball for a second season. T-Ball is an excellent program and
the kids have a great time but we find one season is plenty and love to move the kids up to Coach-Pitch in their second year. With a child that
hasn't reach the league cut-off date we aren't able to do this. |

Question: |
What equipment does my child need to play baseball? |
|
Answer: |
TBall, Coach Pitch, Rookie Ball
They will receive T-shirts and hats which are theirs to keep. They should wear loose pants (sweat pants are fine) NO SHORTS.
We find that plastic baseball gloves are too slippery to handle, but you can find inexpensive leather gloves usually at Canadian Tire.
They do not require cleats, however good runners are a must no Skate shoes please they do not stay tight enough on their feet.
Helmets are supplied as are bats and catching equipment. If you are planning to buy your child their own bat
(which is really not necessary at this age) then please check with the coach on the size, weight etc. Chances are that if you have purchased a
bat — it can only be used outside of scheduled practices and games. (see Little League website for bat regulations
http://www.littleleague.org/
AAA - Majors
Your child will be supplied with uniform pants, a long sleeve shirt, and a baseball cap (If they need another one!).
This equipment is theirs to keep. Once they have been assigned to a team they will have a team meeting and will also receive their uniform
jersey — which must be returned at the end of the season. AAA Teams supplied equipment includes catchers gear, bats, helmets and balls.
Again, cleats are not mandatory, however they are a useful piece of equipment and can be purchased at a reasonable price at either Walmart or Canadian tire.
If you are purchasing bats or other equipment please confirm they are approved with Little League.(see Little League website for bat regulations)

Juniors and up
Your child will be supplied with uniform pants, a long sleeve shirt, and a baseball cap (if they need another one!)!
This equipment is theirs to keep. Once they have been assigned to a team they will have a team meeting and will also receive their uniform
jersey — which must be returned at the end of the season. Teams supplied equipment includes catchers gear, approved bats, and balls.
It is imperative that all bats that will be used in competition be legal. If you are purchasing bats or other equipment please confirm
they are approved with Little League.(see Little League website for bat regulations)
http://www.littleleague.org/
Please note that Juniors and up need to supply their own helmets. |

Question: |
What about All-Star play? |
|
Answer: |
There will likely be seven All-Star teams formed (AAA (2 teams), Major, Major AA, Junior, Junior AA, & Senior).
Participation is on a tryout basis, and generally requires a commitment to be available throughout July and the August long weekend.
It is a great opportunity for the children to continue to play ball at a level that is more competitive than regular season play.
Tryouts will take place in mid to late June. |
